An Exploration of the Washington State Art Collection
Digital Humanities 201 - Winter 2019
Julia R. Karpicz
Created in 1974, the Washington Art in Public Places program is the second oldest state percent for the art program in the United States. Over 45 years, the collection has grown to include over 4,700 pieces, 882 of which (~19%) are housed at Washington's public colleges and universities. This project explores the artists and campus sites that comprise the state's art collection. Specifically, I explore these pieces of art within the context of scholarship on public art, campus development, and higher education. As background, this site includes a brief historical context of percent for arts programs nationally and locally in the state of Washington.
